The Chinese Embassy thinks the US is not safe, warns tourists

CHINA is discouraging its citizens from traveling to the US by posting a notice listing the types of crimes in the country.

“Shooting, robbery, and theft are frequent,” the Chinese Embassy notice read. Travelers were also told to “be alert to suspicious people around you” and to “avoid going out alone at night.”

The notice was posted on June 28, 2018, the same day the Capital Gazette shooting that killed five people took place in Maryland, the US.

The embassy went on to explain that “American public security is not sufficient” in protecting against gun violence.

China has been warning its citizens about gun violence in the US for years. But for good reasons and with the best intentions.

In 2016, 19-year-old Arizona State University scholarship student Yue Jiang was shot and killed in Arizona.

Jiang was waiting at a stop light in a Mercedes when another car, driven by 34-year-old Holly Davis, crashed into it.

A male passenger in Jiang’s car got out to inspect the damage and saw Davis walk towards Jiang’s car with a gun before she opened fire into the driver’s window.

Davis was initially charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder under a deal with prosecutors. She was sentenced to 25 years in prison last month.

To add on, the embassy urged Chinese tourists to avoid “crime scenes and tough neighborhoods”

It also warned Chinese travelers against the high cost of medical expense and the danger of summer natural disasters in the US.

In April, the Chinese Foreign Ministry sent a notice on popular messaging platform WeChat warning of gun crimes that happened frequently in America.

“Be careful and prepare for the possibility that gun crimes may occur at workplaces, schools, at home and at tourist sites,” the notice said.

World tourism has been on a rapid development in recent years and one of its biggest contributors is China, the world’s most populous country.

According to United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), China’s outbound tourists now account for 10 percent of the total of global tourists.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting the US has been rising steadily, to nearly three million in 2016, up from 525,000 in 2009, according to the US’ Department of Commerce.

They’re also the most likely to spend money while traveling, with its travelers racking up US$115.29 billion in receipts, more than twice as much as travelers from the US.
