Holiday like the Trudeaus: Canada’s PM visits India’s top tourist hot spots

AS Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes his first official visit to India this week, he’s brought his family along and is soaking in the sites at some of the country’s most famous tourist attractions.

After receiving a fairly frosty reception on landing New Delhi, being greeted only by a junior agricultural minister as opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trudeau made his way to the landmark Taj Mahal for a photo on the iconic marble bench.

He said on Twitter that the last time he had visited India’s most recognizable structure was 35 years ago.

Making their way on to the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, the Trudeau clan enjoyed spinning cotton and paying their respects at the former residence of Mahatma Gandhi.

Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, it was from this base that Gandhi led the Salt March – also known as the Salt Satyagraha or Dandi March – on March 12, 1930. In recognition of the significant influence that this march had on the Indian independence movement the government established the ashram as a marker for remembrance.

Dressed in full traditional outfits, Trudeau, along with his wife Sophie and children Xavier, Hadrien and Ella-Grace, greeted the press and all signed the visitor’s book at one of India’s most significant national monuments.

Next stop was the impressive Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar. Here the prime minister met with religious leaders and marvelled at the architectural wonder of the 6,000 metric tonnes of pink sandstone that make up the striking structure.

The sprawling complex displays millennia of traditional Hindu and Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture.

Trudeau has received criticism from some back home for his apparent holidaying on the taxpayer’s dollars while not meeting with many of his counterparts in the Indian government. He is only expected to meet Modi on the sixth day of his seven-day tour.

But others were happy to see him getting into the Indian swing of things and hoped he and the whole family enjoy their week-long trip.
