Garuda Indonesia rolls out special perks for umrah pilgrims

LAST MONTH, Indonesia’s flag carrier Garuda Indonesia announced an umrah program allowing GarudaMiles members to contribute toward a fund for those who want to go on an umrah trip but are unable to afford it.

The program, “Sedekah Umrah” (Umrah Donations) is meant to encourage people to embark on the journey.

For the uninitiated, the umrah is a religious Muslim pilgrimage made every year to Mecca in Saudi Arabia – and it comes at a price. With flights, visas, accommodation, and spending money to consider, the trip can easily cost in excess of US$2,000.

Now, to add to its donations program, Garuda Indonesia has also announced it’ll be offering five-star facilities at a special price for passengers going on umrah.

“We are giving special facilities to passengers who depart to the Middle East, particularly those who are going on umrah,” tempo.co quoted Garuda Indonesia’s vice president for Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua I Wayan Supatrayasa as saying.

Aside from the many facilities that the airline already provides its passengers, Garuda Indonesia will also serve halal food and drinks, including five liters of Zamzam water.

Zamzam water from the spring near Masjid al-Haram in the center of Mecca during umrah.

Originating from the Well of Zamzam within Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Zamzam water is believed to be able to satisfy both thirst and hunger. Millions of Muslims visit the well each year while performing haj or umrah in order to drink its water.

To add on, Garuda Indonesia will ensure legroom in the cabin is spacious on the Airbus A330-300 and that passengers will have access to audio video on demand (AVOD) with LCD touchscreens.

Passengers on their umrah trip will also be provided with a 30-kilogram check-in baggage limit.

Garuda Indonesia serves the direct Makassar-Jeddah route every Thursday and Saturday. The flight duration is about nine hours and 40 minutes.
